JUNIOR PRIMARY
GRADES 1-3
GRADE 1
The first day of Grade 1 for every learner, is always a memory both parent and child will never forget! The ‘build up’ to this special day is met with enthusiasm, excitement and trepidation and within a few days the learners soon adapt to the formal routine of assemblies, specialist lessons and Saturday morning sport which include mini-cricket, mini-rugby and now mini-hockey.
Grade 1 is a year in which the learners learn to read, solve numeracy problems and further develop their Life skills. For the teachers of each of our 4 Grade 1 classes, it is most rewarding to embrace the new learner at the beginning of the year and confidently promote him to Grade 2 equipped with all the Literacy, Numeracy and Life Skills required in the next stage of his learning.
Excursions are planned around the themes that are taught and these outings are always met with much excitement. Galas, Sports Day and Assembly presentations are also included in the day to day learning experiences.

In addition to teaching Literacy, Numeracy and Life Skills, the Grade 2 programme includes Music, Speech and Drama, Computers, Zulu, Ball Skills, Swimming and Excursions to interesting venues around Durban.
At the end of a busy and rewarding year, the boys leave Grade 2 well- equipped to deal with the challenges of the next stage of their DPHS schooling.

GRADE 3
Grade 3 is an exciting and unique experience for our young learners!
At DPHS, we provide a balanced, interesting and challenging programme which builds on the firm foundations developed in Grade 1 and Grade 2 and prepares our young boys for admission to the Senior Primary Phase of their education.
It is a very busy year of fun, new experiences and challenges for our 4 Grade 3 classes with lessons such as Computer Science, Design & Tech, Art and Media Studies are taught in small groups of approximately ten learners by specialist teachers who focus on providing individual attention to develop maximum competency for the boys.
In Grade 3 our learners are offered their first opportunities to play in inter-school sports fixtures such as Rugby, Cricket and Hockey ensuring both the development of essential skills and healthy sportsmanship.
As part of the cirriculum, learners are given the opportunity to attend Club Activities and are able to choose between Art and Craft, Cookery and Chess for three terms of the year.
A highlight of the year’s activities is the Grade 3 Concert which is presented every year during the fourth term. As part of our Outreach programme, our Grandparents and residents of local senior citizens homes are invited to a special production of this concert followed by a delicious morning tea.
In addition to several day outings relevant to theme work, in Grade 3 our boys enjoy their first overnight excursion – an occasion which bring a sense if trepidation for many but is always successful and provides the necessary preparation for longer excursions and Sport Tours in the future.
