Junior Primary Staff Development

The JP teachers, always willing to take opportunities to stay abreast of educational trends and to reinforce and gain new insights, have attended several Staff Development meetings during this past week.
The first was a presentation by Maureen O’Meara, senior Speech and Language Therapist at Heidi Allan’s practice. A number of staff from Sophunga Primary as well as librarians from The LEARN Project schools in Inanda joined the Prep staff for this very informative and insightful workshop on “Reading Comprehension”. It helped to reinforce knowledge as well as gave valuable ideas for strategies to support the development of oral and reading comprehension.
Secondly, two teachers attended a NAPTOSA workshop on Maths games which promote lateral thinking and reinforce important Maths concepts.
Three JP teachers spent Tuesday afternoon at Durban Girls’ College. This “Just JP” meeting allowed them to interact with other Foundation Phase educators from the area and the main topic under discussion was Homework.
