Grade 3 Literacy & Friendship Day 2019

Durban Preparatory High School and The LEARN Project celebrated National Book Week with their Literacy & Friendship Day. About 100 Grade Three learners and staff from Sophunga Primary began their morning in the hall with the whole JP Department. Having welcomed the visitors. Mr Wilson was proud to hand over 50 illustrated Oxford Dictionaries to the Grade Threes of Sophunga Primary. These were purchased with the proceeds of the 2018 Bear Raffle and covered and processed by The LEARN Project.

After an energetic and educational dance sequence led by Ros Toerien, the children enjoyed the Puppet World show entitled “Safari Fun”, with many members of the audience experiencing the opportunity to be actively involved.

The crowd participation was entertaining and the puppets were fascinating.

Each Grade Three Prep boy was then partnered with a visitor and the boys made exemplary hosts as they interacted and cared for their buddy. Each Prep boy and his partner then enjoyed a snack followed by a time of shared reading.

The field activities involved the children moving between stations which included gumboot dancing, fitness, skills, a running game and time to play on the jungle gym. this extremely enjoyable and worthwhile morning was concluded with an ice cream treat.

The Prep boys then presented their buddies with a small gift and gave them a rousing farewell as they lined the corridor, applauding their new friends as they returned to their bus. Not only was it a day full of worthwhile activity but the caring and friendship shown between the “buddies” made this day a very special and memorable one.
