Matt Coetzer (DPHS Class of 2017) competed for South Africa in the 2021 ICF Canoe Marathon champs in Romania recently. He paddled the K2 Junior Men’s race with Josh Simpkins. They had a brilliant race and either led or were in the front group for most of the 22,6km. After 1:32 minutes of racing they were lined up to take the Bronze medal when they fell out of their boat and had to empty it before finishing the race in 13th place. The Hungarian team won in a time of 1:35. The commentators called it the ‘race of their lives’. Both boys will still be U18 next year and hope to qualify again for the South Africa team to compete in Portugal next year. #ProudlyPrep
