DPHS wants to provide an innovative structure for the introduction of information technology to primary school learners. This structure had to meet the following criteria.
  • It must expose the primary school learner to a wide variety of relevant IT skills
  • It must equip the learner with skills that can be applied to school projects as well as everyday use
  • It must change every year to meet the requirements of the IT industry
  • It must be enjoyed by the learners
  • It must be value for money

The implementation :

  1. To develop a long term plan for PC infrastructure, and IT education, which will include a structured IT curriculum and the use of a specialist IT mentor to facilitate the introduction of this plan.
  2. To ensure that the policy of one child per PC is maintained, to train additional teachers as IT mentors and to provide additional clubs and courses.
  3. To introduce and develop an affordable Intranet and Internet structure and develop internet networking skills of learners and teachers and provide an electronic support and communication system between the school and the school community.
  4. To be a leader in the field of effective information technology education which provides the best value for money education.

Positive aspects:

  • The tremendous speed at which the learners in Grade 1 and Grade 2 acquired new skills. This proves that the curriculum suits the needs of the younger child.
  • Our learners don't want to miss any lessons.
  • The activity and learner-centred approach helps to develop concentration, listening and memory skills.
  • The project-oriented approach 'forces' the learner to 'take control', to become actively involved and to work to achieve.

Introduction

  • Technology has changed the way we live, the way we work, the way we conduct business, the way we run our homes, the way we learn and the way we teach.
  • Technology and the need for us to constantly change and grow with technology has become a way of life.
  • In order to properly equip all pupils with the skills to cope in a technological world, and to survive in the business world they are set to inherit, we need to be equipped with the right skills.

IT Learning System

Project-oriented curriculum incorporates five key elements:

  • fun
  • technology
  • the application of technology to everyday life
  • using technology tools for overall development - creativity, logical thinking, lateral thinking, listening skills, and general knowledge
  • personal achievement and growth for every child.
  • Children learn how to use a computer as a tool. They gain skills they will use now and for the rest of their lives.
