DPHS NEWS AND RESULTS
BULLETIN 03: WEDNESDAY 25 JANUARY 2012
To all
Parents, Old Boys and Members of the Prep Community
FROM THE HEADMASTER
The school extends a very warm and special invitation to all our new parents to attend the Cocktail Party this Friday night in the DPHS Maurice Wilkinson Hall starting at 18h30. The evening will be hosted by the School Governing Body and staff and teachers will attend. Please use the opportunity to meet members of the Governing Body and the staff. We may not all know each other by name yet but a friendly, relaxing and welcoming social gathering and chat does mean that in the future parents and staff, having met at the cocktail party, will feel free and better able to communicate and share their thoughts or concerns with regard to the wellbeing of the boys and the school.
DPHS Old Boy -First in South Africa
How proud I felt this morning as the DPHS representative when I attended the special assembly held at DHS in honour of DHS and DPHS old boy Kashmeel Bisseru who was placed first in South Africa in the 2011 Matric exams. Kashmeel’s accomplishment is the ultimate and most distinguished scholastic high school achievement possible. The tone of the assembly was one of humility and dignity and I not only felt proud but also inspired by the spirit of the DHS boys and the school. Headmaster, Dave Magner’s address and the speeches by Kashmeel and his Mathematics teacher, Narenee Mewalal reminded me of a quotation attributed to Albert Einstein, ‘Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value’. Kashmeel, in his address to the school, was very humble and gracious, thanking his teachers for their dedication and hard work and the part they played in helping him achieve his goals. I was able to congratulate DHS, Kashmeel and his family on our school’s behalf. They very kindly and generously acknowledged DPHS’s part in preparing Kashmeel for high school and setting him on the path towards fulfilling his dreams. We wish Kashmeel well for his engineering studies in KZN. Thank you DHS for inviting DPHS to attend this very special occasion

RECEPTION UNIT NEWS
The Reception Unit boys were delighted to welcome Sharkie into the playground last week, causing much excitement. A few hesitant little souls who stood back at the start, soon joined in and a great time was had by all.
We were delighted to have such a wonderful turnout at our New Parents Evening and do hope that newcomers to the Prep family were able to meet other moms and dads in their son’s class. On Friday 27 January, The DPHS Governing Body warmly welcomes all Grade 0 parents to the New Parents and Teachers Cocktail Party. This will take place in the Maurice Wilkinson Hall from 18h30 to 20h00.
JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS
The first Mini-Cricket session for the Grade 1 and 2 boys took place on Saturday morning and the boys thoroughly enjoyed a time of skills practice and games. Sincere thanks are extended to those dads who have committed themselves to the role of team coach for the season. The success and enjoyment of the programme is dependent on their assistance which is much appreciated by the boys, parents and staff.
The swimming time trials for the Championship Gala, scheduled for 7 February, are presently in progress. Grade 3 Club activities have begun and Grade 1 Ball Skills will start next week, by which time the full Extra-Curricular programme will be well underway.
The first House Dress Day will be on Friday. The boys are excited about arriving at school dressed in their House Kit and then spending some time meeting their new Prep Pals when the families gather together after assembly.
We are looking forward to seeing as many parents as possible at the New Parents’ Cocktail Party this Friday 27 January from 18h30 to 20h00. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Prep parents and the staff looks forward to welcoming you.

SENIOR PRIMARY NEWS
The Grade 7 Boys were awarded their Grade7 Ties at a special assembly on Monday. Each boy in the grade is afforded the opportunity to develop his leadership skills by involving himself in every aspect of school life.
The Grade 7 Boys are looking forward to their first Prep Pal meeting on Friday, where they will be introduced to their Prep Pal Families for the first time. Each boy in Grade 7 is allocated a pupil from each of the lower Grades, affording the senior boy the opportunity to become mentor or guardian of his group of six younger boys. It is the duty of the older members of each group of pals to take a personal interest in each of the younger boys as individuals and in so doing encourage their happiness and success at DPHS.
We are looking forward to seeing as many parents as possible at the New Parents’ Cocktail Party this Friday 27 January from 18h30 to 20h00. Please make the most of this wonderful opportunity to meet other Prep Parents and the Prep Staff.

GENERAL
2011 JABULA DAY
The school received the following letter from SuperClean:
At the onset of the new school year, we wish to thank the learners of DPHS for the generous donation of gifts received in December 2011 in support of our Jabula Day.
We attach a letter of thanks and further information regarding the relevant charities who were grateful recipients of these gifts which were distributed by the Rotary Club of Pinetown.
We wish to thank you once again for your continued support of these community projects.
Letter from the Chairman of the Rotary Club of Pinetown
On behalf of the Community of KwaNdengezi we express our thanks for the large quantity of toys, clothes and sweets that were donated via Superclean.
I attach some details of a small part of our work in that area- work that could only be done by the generosity of people like yourselves.
Since we touch almost every aspect of suffering and moral and scholastic regeneration in the area, we are ideally situated to make the most out of your gifts.

NEWS FROM DHS
The year has got off to a great start. I was very pleased with the Matric results. Kashmeel Bisseru was remarkable, achieving 100% in 3 subjects, and getting the top marks in KZN for Mathematics. Truly an astonishing performance.Breaking news. Kashmeel Bisseru had had a problem with his Science mark. The department initially gave him a mark of 74%, and when we pointed out that was impossible, discovered there had been an admin error. When corrected, he received 100% for Science. We then asked how this affected his position in the top pupils in the country. It took them a while, but a dept official-Raymond Penniston, son was at PREP - told us last night that Kashmeel was the TOP pupil in South Africa!!! I am sure you are as delighted as we are. I was also pleased to see other ex Prep boys doing well in the rest of the school. Nikyle Bisseru was second in Grade 8, and there were no less than 7 Prep boys in the top ten in the Grade. Two Prep boys were in the top ten in Grade 9, Yasir Sacoor and Steven Prinsloo. In Grade 10 Julian Janse Van Rensburg and Nick Conyngham were one and two in the Grade, with both being awarded Honours for Academics .Another 3 Prep boys were in the top ten. Finally, in Grade 11, Prep took the honours again, with Dimitrije Mamontov top of the Grade. A fantastic effort from all the Prep boys!
Jared Van Heerden was chosen for the SA Colts Cricket side. Prep old boy Trent Bingham has been chosen for the Laser Yacht training squad for the next Olympic Games. Our 1 XI did well at the Grey College Festival, and our start studded U15 A side was the team to watch at the Queen’s College Festival. Top scorer there was Tristan Ross with 151 not out! In the same game Brendan De Meillon took 7 for 24!
All in all we are off to a galloping start to 2012!
Regards
Dave Magner
