DPHS NEWS AND RESULTS

To all Parents, Old Boys and Members of the Prep Community

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Parents, Old Boys, Staff Members, former Staff, Friends and Boys,

Cricket Festival
Durban Preparatory High School takes great pleasure in extending a very friendly welcome to our visitors and the participants in our National U13 Centenary Cricket Festival.

We thank our guests for accepting our invitation and sharing the excitement and enjoyment of our Centenary with us. We acknowledge with special appreciation our visitors from other provinces: Grey from Bloemfontein, KEPS and Trinity from Johannesburg, Selbourne from East London and Pelham from Pietermaritzburg. We extend a special welcome to the Durban Development team and their Officials. We thank our Durban friends, Clifton, Northlands and Virginia for their very generous support and participation by co-hosting our visitors and providing match venues.

May our very generous sponsors BoE Private Clients feel well rewarded and take great pride and pleasure in the quality of cricket played and the sportsmanship and friendships shared by the boys, parents, coaches, umpires and headmasters.

Centenary Celebrations
It has been an exciting start to Prep’s Centenary year with the boys enjoying a special Centenary assembly. The birthday cake with 100 burning candles will be remembered for a long time. The boys were treated to birthday cake and each boy has been given a Centenary year badge to wear throughout the year.

To make the boys feel special and part of our Centenary year we will be having various Centenary Days throughout the year whereby the boys will be able to wear the “Centenary Celebration Uniform”. The Centenary Celebration uniform for Grade 1- Grade 7 will be the Centenary cap, Centenary shirt, white boxer shorts, school tennis socks and running shoes (sports takkies). Grade 0: Centenary shirt, Centenary cap, denim shorts and sandals.

The boys will be allowed to wear their Centenary caps at all their cricket matches in Terms 1 and 4. If boys are at school supporting other teams as spectators they may wear the Centenary Celebration Uniform.

The compulsory DPHS Centenary Dress days are as follows:

26 February 2010, 26 March 2010, 30 April 2010, 21 May 2010, 9 June 2010, 23 July 2010, 20 August 2010, 23 September 2010, 22 October 2010, 12 November 2010 and 3 December 2010. These dates will appear on the school calendar and boys will be reminded by their class teachers.

We look forward to a memorable and fun-filled year. Thank you for your continued support.

RECEPTION UNIT NEWS

We welcome back Val Cotterell who has been on leave for two weeks, for her daughter’s wedding. The boys in Green Group have really missed her and are delighted to have her back in the classroom.

On Tuesday, the Reception Unit pupils visited the Central Fire Station. This was not only an educational excursion but also great fun as they got to play in the foam! For some of our boys, it was also their first bus trip which added to the excitement.

Dear Grade 0 2009 Boys
We are really missing you and would love you and mom to come down to the Reception Unit to visit us on Monday 1 March from 12h35 to 13h15 and show us all how smart you look in your new uniform.
With love from:
Mrs Phipson, Mrs Cotterell, Mrs Bruorton, Miss Smit, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Bland, Mrs Lushaba, Nicholas and Sakhile.

JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS

The Prep Pal family meetings on Friday were a great success. The Grade 7 boys showed very promising leadership skills as each one guided his appointed “family” through an interactive task which allowed them to get to know each other. The JP boys always gain particular benefit as they are nurtured by the older boys in their group.

The Grade Ones spent an extremely enjoyable, albeit very hot, day at Mitchell Park yesterday! They walked to the park armed with their lunch and clipboard. There was great excitement as they attempted to identify and count the various animals and birds and they thoroughly enjoyed the workbook activities which required them to record their observations in various formats. This outing was organized in order to provide the boys with a fun, interactive opportunity to apply many of the Literacy and Numeracy skills they have learnt to date.

NEWS FROM DHS

My thanks to the Prep parents and their sons who came tour Open Evening for Prep boys last week. It was great to see some old faces and have a chance to chat with parents and boys. I trust that you all enjoyed your visit. We are currently interviewing large numbers of boys, so please make sure applications are submitted timeously. The Cricket season ends for us this week, with the 1 st XI hosting Grey College from Bloemfontein. The rest of the school has fixtures against Northwood. Next week sees the start of the silly season, as Rugby gets into full swing! We are playing our first matches against College on the weekend of the 13 March. We have a few pre-season matches, but College is the big one.
