BULLETIN 21: Wednesday 21 July 2010
DPHS NEWS AND RESULTS

To all Parents, Old Boys and Members of the Prep Community

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Parents, Old Boys, Staff Members, former Staff, Friends and Boys,

The Headmaster and Deputy Headmaster are at a Headmaster’s Conference in Blanco near Tarkastad, Queenstown until 22 July. The theme is ‘Invest in the Pride’.

Coast 2 Coast 4 Cansa Feedback Presentation
Russell Symcox, Barry Lewin and Mark Addison visited the school to give feedback on their expedition from Ponto De Oura, Mozambique to Alexander Bay and the Orange River mouth – the border between South Africa and Namibia. The school enjoyed a brief video clip of the 24 day expedition during which the team covered 28 000 km from. Then Prep Old Boy Russell Symcox told how the trip had been challenging on every level - being in the sun and on the sea from sun-up to sunset. Their aim had been to raise awareness about Cancer and to encourage a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Another aim was to raise funds. To this end each DPHS boy had been given a collection tin at the initial presentation before the epic journey had begun. The Prep community was thanked and congratulated because R32 000 had been raised from the tin collection and this money would go a long way to making a difference in so many people’s lives.

Russell had two messages for the boys. His first was to express thanks to DPHS for their amazing support and their commitment to always giving of their best. His second message was to emphasise the need to set goals, have dreams and to achieve these dreams. Russell concluded by reminding the boys that DPHS prepares you to achieve your dreams.

RECEPTION UNIT NEWS

The Reception Unit was delighted to be included in the school assembly on Friday, to take part in the feed back from the participants in C2C4C fundraiser. A big thank you to all our parents who filled their tins and returned them to school. DPHS managed to raise R32 000!

The Prep Mothers’ Committee has invited the Grade 0 boys to join in the fun at the Annual Camp Out which takes place on Saturday night. Any pupil who would like to stay overnight needs to be accompanied by an adult.

A reminder to you all that the boys need to wear their Centenary Kit on Friday.

JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS

The boys are to be commended for the positive way in which they have settled into the busy third term programme after their long break. The U9 boys enjoyed their first Hockey practice at the Riverside Astro on Monday and the Grade 1 and 2 boys are looking forward to their first Mini-Hockey session this Saturday morning. Many of the JP boys will be participating in the Camp Out this weekend and we wish them and the Mothers’ Committee a most enjoyable and successful event.

NEWS FROM DHS

We have successfully navigated the first week, and we are back in the groove. This week sees grade 10 boys in the Berg for the Cobham Hike, and Grade 11’s at work experience. School will be a quieter place, no doubt! Both these events are part of our Leadership Programme, and have become hugely important for the development of the boys. I am sure they will be both enjoyable and very worthwhile.

The school participates every year in the World Knowledge Olympiad and once again excelled. We won awards for the highest number of participants, and also achieved top places in KZN at a number of grades. Prep old boys did exceptionally well. Darren Conyngham and Adam Waites were the star performers, coming first and second respectively in the country at Grade 12 level. Nicholas Conyngham came second in KZN.
