FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents, Old Boys, Staff Members, former Staff, Friends and Boys,
Welcome back to school after a unique and exciting World Cup holiday experience.
What a spectacular success and ground breaking event the Soccer World Cup has been for South Africans! South Africans made it happen and set new standards of planning and delivery on micro and macro levels in safety, business, travel, recreation and sport for our cities, provinces and country.
The boys, staff and parents of DPHS wish to congratulate the organizers on so successfully fulfilling the vision of an African and South African World Cup and exceeding the expectations of so many visitors and South Africans. Well done to Durban and its city fathers and mothers for presenting a pristine venue for the enjoyment of Soccer fans, visitors and Durbanites.
We are duty bound to remain inspired and to do the best we can as a team for our children, school, education and country. Viva South Africa! Viva DPHS!
My good wishes to the boys and staff, so well supported by our parents, for a very happy and successful third term.
Welcome
We extend a warm and friendly welcome to our new boys this term, Michael Joyce (Grade 2), Cole Toerien (Grade 3), Maswazi Shabalala (Grade 5) and Taldon Naidoo (Grade 7), parents and their families. We hope each of our new boys has enjoyed his first day at DPHS. Our good wishes to these boys for a happy and rewarding career at the school

RECEPTION UNIT NEWS
After a wonderful, soccer-filled long break, we are all back to normal again. Yesterday, the locker room was full of little boys excitedly sharing stories about their soccer heroes, the matches they watched, going to the Fan Park and general 2010 World Cup chatter.
We welcome Clare Taylor this term, who will be assisting Karyn Bruorton in Red Group whilst Lisa Cook is doing her teaching prac up at Main Campus. Clare has recently qualified as a teacher and will be gaining valuable experience during this time.

JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS
It was wonderful to see everyone again on the first day of term after the extended and especially exciting mid-year break. By all accounts the holiday was very enjoyable and I trust that everyone who was able to experience the World Cup Soccer in some form found it to be a most memorable and positive event. Congratulations to Grade 3 boys Liam Ross and Claudio Lehman who had the privilege of being player escorts – a very special experience which they thoroughly enjoyed and I’m sure will remain with them always.
The third term is a particularly busy one from a sports perspective as it caters for both Athletics and Hockey. Boys are reminded to ensure that their Athletics kit is in order as practices will take place during school time in preparation for the Annual JP Inter-House Athletics event on Friday 27 August. JP Hockey at the Riverside Astro Turf begins next week.
It is a pleasure to have RU Teacher Assistant Lisa Cook and Prep mum Lydia Bush in the JP Department as well as Prep mum Debbie van Diermen in the Learning Support Department while they complete their practical teaching requirements for their teaching degrees. We trust that they will find this time very worthwhile and constructive and wish them well with their studies.

NEWS FROM DHS
The World Cup is now history and what a wonderful time it was. The buzz in our country was awesome, and we can feel well pleased with ourselves as a country for putting on a magnificent Cup. Well done to everyone, and how good it is to know that all the naysayers were proved so horribly wrong. I hope the positive vibe continues.
The school has been a hive of activity over the holiday period. Thanks once again to our very generous DHS Trusts, we have done some major refurbishment of our classrooms. All have undergone a makeover, with new flooring, painting and doors. We have also installed new white boards, as well as specialized e-beam technology in twenty classrooms. This is coupled with laptops and projectors to provide state of the art technology for the staff. I am confident this will enhance the education of the boys considerably. Staff are thrilled, and this is providing them with renewed motivation to tackle the tough demands of the rest of this year. Thank you to the Governing Body for your support of the project, and to the Trusts for funding this enormous project.
A number of boys have excelled over the holiday in various areas. Four of our boys are excelling in the marvellous Hairspray at the Sneddon. Trent Bingham is to represent the Point Yacht Club in the Lipton Race in Cape Town next month. Richard Curtis was picked for the South African Under 17 Hockey team. Prep old boys Marco Lopes and Nick Williams were members of the KZN Coastals team that won the Under 18 IPT.
