BULLETIN 16: Wednesday 19 May 2010
DPHS NEWS AND RESULTS

To all Parents, Old Boys and Members of the Prep Community

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Parents, Old Boys, Staff Members, former Staff, Friends and Boys,

How proud I was to take our 2011 Grade 0 Prospective Parents on a tour of the Reception Unit and main school campus on Thursday last. The grounds and buildings were spic and span, the boys and teachers busy and working hard and a strong mood of warmth and friendliness prevailed. My thanks and congratulations to the teachers, boys, staff and parents for making our school such a pleasant place to visit and work in.

This has been an extremely busy term and I am sure all will share my sense of amazement that in three weeks time we will be enjoying a centenary dress day for the final assembly of the second term. There are still many events on our term calendar. Possibly key is the Grade 6 and 7 standardised testing programme which begins on Monday. The boys are hard at work preparing for the week and we wish them well with their tests.

RICHARD NEAVE
Headmaster

CONGRATULATIONS

On Sunday 16 May, the DPHS Gumboot Dance Team, led by Yusuf Docrat, provided a unique and inspiring display of dance at the Cultural Festival which preceded the Sunset Proms Concert. The DPHS Choir, led by Matthew Everitt, sang four items with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in the Sunset Proms Programme. An inspiring rendition of Adieamus, followed by the Vuvuzela song, Spirit of the Great Heart and We are the World was well received by the appreciative audience.

RECEPTION UNIT NEWS

A very warm welcome to Adam Wesselink and his family, who started at the Reception Unit last week. Adam has settled very happily into Red Group and has already made many new friends.

Our first Football Friday last week, caused great excitement amongst the boys. Bafana Bafana shirts ruled the day although we had a few English Premier League as well as local soccer club supporters. There was great rivalry amongst the Chelsea and Portsmouth fans! A reminder to all our Reception Unit parents that this Friday is Centenary Kit day.

JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS

It was a pleasure to host a group of prospective parents on Thursday morning and to show them the school “in action”. I was very proud of the Junior Primary boys and their conduct on this important occasion. As part of the build up to the World Cup the boys thoroughly enjoyed wearing the colours of their favourite Soccer Team on Friday and their theme work is certainly enhancing their awareness of the various countries involved. All the class and individual photographs were taken on Tuesday and we are hoping to receive the packages before the end of the term. Final preparations for the Speech and Drama Festival are underway and the adjudication for the JP individual poems began today.

NEWS FROM DHS

The term is racing away from us and we only have three weeks left. Scary! We write exams in the last two weeks of school. The staff then mark during the holidays. It is tough on them, but is a much better scenario than writing earlier. It ensures that there is minimal disruption to the academic progress of the school. The contractor has finally come on site, and we are hoping to have our B field floodlit in two weeks time. It will be a great asset to us, and we look forward to hosting evening sports events later in the year. If all goes well we will be hosting a 20/20 event in the fourth term.
