FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents, Old Boys, Staff Members, former Staff, Friends and Boys,
Max Moshal Gallery
It was a pleasure and great privilege to welcome John Moshal, Old Boy of the school his wife Anna, their sons Martin and Richard and family and friends to the official opening and naming of the beautiful new gallery in the Maurice Wilkinson hall on Thursday 18 March. John’s wonderful generosity in providing the funds for the building of the gallery and the kind and generous assistance he has given to boys and their families at DPHS on previous occasions is greatly appreciated by the school. The Gallery is named in honour of John’s father Max Moshal who attended DPHS from 1914 to 1918. It is my wish that all those who are ever seated in the beautiful Max Moshal gallery be blessed and look upon the school with the same kindness, generosity of heart and magnanimity, as shown to the school by old boy John Moshal and his family. The boys gave John and his family three rousing cheers after the school’s 100 voice Centurion choir’s moving rendition of ‘Spirit of the Great Heart.’ We thank John and his family most sincerely for their munificent generosity and gift to DPHS.
End of Term News
In all my many years at DPHS the school has not experienced a busier term. The school has never in one term hosted more events or visitors. Most commendable is how the teachers have remained unwaveringly focused on the boys’ scholastic progress. Not an easy task when the school has been in celebration mode.
I invite boys, parents and staff to look back with pride and satisfaction on the long and impressive list of events and accomplishments we have celebrated in the first term of our school‘s centenary year. What a challenging and rewarding term it has been. I extend a special thank you to parents for the invaluable part they have played. Thank you for hosting our many visiting sportsmen, close to three hundred boys, from St Stithians and from Trinityhouse and teams of cricketers from other provinces who attended our DPHS National Cricket Festival. We have successfully celebrated the opening of the new Administration block and new Staffroom and the naming of The Daitz Foundation Media Centre and Learning support centres. We celebrated the opening of the new Max Moshal school hall gallery. A highlight of the term for old boys and the school community was undoubtedly the magnificently presented and well supported School Centenary Dinner. The evening was a rewarding tribute to the schools centenary and a meaningful and enjoyable opportunity for old boys, parents, colleagues and friends to gather together and affirm their allegiance to the school as members of the Prep family. I thank boys and staff members for their recent contributions to the Chris Cubitt fund and participating in the 2010 Soccer World Cup dress-up celebration.
The Prep boys as always have given of their best in all that has been asked of them and I wish to commend each and every one of them for making us all so proud of the school in its Centenary Year. I thank the teachers, staff and parents most sincerely for their dedicated support of the school and boys. We could not have wished for a better start to our Centenary Year. How fortunate and privileged we are to be members of this great school and how fortunate and privileged the school is to have so many quality boys, parents, teachers, staff members and friends.
When we return to school we will have The 2010 Soccer World Cup to look forward to. What a proud and momentous event and celebration for our country. I hope like me you have learnt to blow a Vuvazela . ‘Bafana Bafana’ is our call – go South Africa!
My good wishes to the boys, teachers and staff for a very enjoyable, restful and well earned holiday. May all our Prep families enjoy the holidays and be blessed at Easter time.

RECEPTION UNIT NEWS
The Reception Unit joined the Junior Primary boys on Monday to attend a concert given by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, which was highly entertaining as well as being suited to school children. The boys were also educated about the various instruments that make up an orchestra.
Our chicks are growing very rapidly and now have feathered wings and tails. The boys have been fascinated by them and will be sad to see them leave today, when they will go back to the farm with Mrs Lushaba.
We would like to wish all our families a safe and enjoyable Easter break.

JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS
The JP Invitation Gala last Thursday was a great success. It was very well supported and there was a wonderful atmosphere as the U7, U8 and U9 swimmers from the 7 participating schools were given the opportunity to swim against each other in relay events. Congratulations to all the participants and a special thank-you to Mrs Muller and the parents who assisted her at the refreshments table as well as all the Prep families who provided a wonderful spread of eats for the spectators to enjoy.
On Friday much excitement was engendered as the boys came to school dressed in the colours of their favourite Soccer Club or Team and in so doing lent their support to the Chris Cubitt Memorial Fund. As has become traditional, the Prep Pal families then met after the special assembly and spent some time discussing their favourite sports and recording this information in a graph format. Later that morning the JP boys were treated to the highly entertaining “Hooked on Books” presentation. The team acted out excerpts from books which were then available for purchase afterwards with many boys taking the opportunity to buy one of these very popular publications at discounted prices.
Tim Whitfield, the organizer of the 2010 DPHS Mudman, visited the JP assembly on Tuesday morning and introduced the boys to this year’s exciting event. The JP boys have always shown an outstanding level of participation and we are sure that this year will be no exception, especially taking into consideration the fact that it will take place at Thornlea Dam for the first time and that there will be many prizes available. Please diarize Sunday 18 April and bring along family and friends. Entry forms will be sent home today.
A big thank-you is due to all the JP boys for their wonderful support of the Recycling Campaign so far and special congratulations go to the winning classes for this first term. A total of 219m 06cmwas collected!
As the term draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the JP teachers for their unfaltering commitment and leadership throughout this very busy term. I also wish to thank all the JP parents for their support of their sons and the school and to commend the boys for their enthusiasm and efforts as well as wish everyone a happy and restful holiday.

NEWS FROM DHS
Last week we had the pleasure of hosting the entire Prep Grade 7 group at DHS, on Langley’s Day. The event was to commemorate the creation of Durban Prep 100 years ago. The boys seemed to have a wonderful time at school, and we hope to make this event an annual affair. My special thanks to DHS Old Boy Grant Phipson, who facilitated the day from Prep’s side. It was a pleasure for us to entertain the boys.
I attended the Girls’ College production of Absurd Person Singular last week. Head Boy David Prinsloo, a Prep old boy, was superb, as were all of the young cast. An excellent evening. Well done to all involved.
Congratulations to Prep old boy, Ryan Williams, who has been chosen as captain of Hockey at DHS. He will be assisted by another Prep old boy Marco Lopes as his vice. Good luck guys.
Enjoy your Easter break.
Regards
Dave Magner
