FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents, Old Boys, Staff Members, former Staff, Friends and Boys,
That time or the year has come again for us from ‘The Warmest Place to Be’ to undertake our brief but epic rugby and tennis migration to the ‘The Place of Penguins and Seals’. Our friendly and always welcoming host schools in Cape Town, SACS, Bishops and Wynberg have spoken to the weather gods and asked for a cloudless mountain, windless days and sunshine for their visitors. With more parent support than there were Soccer World Cup supporters we will arrive prepared for all eventualities and most especially fierce competition on the tennis courts and rugby fields. My good wishes to the boys, coaches and parents for a successful, enjoyable and memorable tour to Cape Town. Old boys in Cape Town are invited to support DPHS, most especially since the school as many will know is celebrating its centenary this year. The tour itinerary is included in this Prep Patter. The Deputy Head, Hank Pike and I will accompany the tour.
The schools extends its grateful thanks to Deborah Finlay and her very hard working team of Mums and Dads for providing the school and boys with a highly enjoyable and successful camp out. Every meter of space on both fields was covered by boys and tents. The soccer and many other fun activities provided a very festive vibe and the food was five star. Thank you to the hundreds of boys and parents who supported the camp out on Saturday.
The Deputy Head, Hank Pike and I had the pleasure of attending a very enlightening and refreshing conference last week for Heads of Boys Prep schools. The conference was hosted by Queens Junior from Queenstown and whilst the temperatures remained chilly we were overwhelmed by the warmth of friendship and hospitality our hosts provided. In formal and informal discussion this close brotherhood of schools and their school leaders reaffirmed their commitment towards providing a best of kind service and schooling to boys and education in our country.
CONDOLENCES
All at Durban Prep are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic loss of Prep Old Boy, Dean Colin Du Chenne. 28 09 1987 – 23 07 2010. Our thoughts go out to Dennis and Di Du Chenne, his family and friends, and especially all his classmates from the Class of 2000.
“May the calm be widespread
May the ocean glisten as greenstone
May the shimmer of light
Ever dance across your pathway”

JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS
On Monday the JP boys were treated to an excellent presentation by Educate and Fascinate entitled “One Earth, One Chance”. The programme included interesting facts with visual input and audience participation. Important lessons about the need to care for our environment were learnt and each boy received a small pot with coriander seeds which he will plant, care for, watch grow and then add to a meal!
Simone Masson from MySchool attended our JP assembly this week. She had prizes for those boys whose parents have been using the card regularly. Congratulations to Grade 1 Nolan and a very big thank-you to all the parents in that class as they are the winning JP class for swiping their MySchool card most frequently in the last month. Ms Masson asked all the boys to remind their parents to swipe their MySchool card when shopping at outlets affiliated with this programme as this earns money for Prep and gives the cardholder a chance of winning R10 000!
Time trials have begun for the JP Sports Day and preparations will continue during the month ahead.
All parents have received the invitation to the presentation by Kerry Salvesen on Wednesday 4 August at 18h30. This talk is highly recommended and I encourage as many parents as possible to attend.

GENERAL
Twitter
DPHS signed on for Twitter last year but subscription has been slow. Our hope is this is because an appeal has not been made to the Prep community to register and many people do not yet fully grasp the implications. In essence the message is delivered as an sms and there is no need for high-tec mobile phones.
What is most exciting is that it will be another opportunity to communicate with our parents and members of the Prep community.
We therefore appeal to all our parents, old boys and friends to register by CLICKING HERE
MySchool
Our records show that R2726.63 was raised this month against R2967.97 last month. 393 supporters raised funds for the school this month, whilst 390 supporters used their MySchool card to support the school last month.
SEAN WISEDALE PRESENTATION
Sean Wisedale, award winning adventure camera man and author of best seller “Freeze Frame”, the first person from Africa to climb the highest mountain on each of the 7 continents is speaking on Thursday 29 th July at Durban Girls College at 6pm for 6.30pm @ R 100 per person (students R 75) inclusive of cocktail function to be held afterwards.
Sean’s inspiration talk outlines the importance of preparation, goal setting, overcoming obstacles and celebrating victory. His aim is to show that “an ordinary individual” is able to stand head-and-shoulders above the rest and reach the summit of your own Everest. World class footage will be shown.

NEWS FROM DHS
Last week was a quiet one at the school. All Grade 11 boys were on a week of Work Experience, and the Grade tens were in the Cobham area of the ‘Berg on a leadership exercise. Both are part of our extensive leadership programme, and were hugely successful. I spent a number of days with the Grade 10 boys, and what a marvellous trip it was. For many of the boys it was their first experience of camping and hiking in a wilderness area. The six days offer a variety of experiences, and the testing conditions offer the boys an opportunity to challenge themselves and grow as individuals.
The football season continues apace, with large numbers of boys involved. Our 1st XI performed well in the Kloof Tournament, reaching the Plate Finals before losing on penalties.
Regards
Dave Magner
